About

Problem

The previous website for the publishing company showcased the catalog but had several challenges that affected the user experience. It displayed books without integrated e-commerce functionality, which meant users had to locate sellers elsewhere. Navigation was confusing, as books from various publishing houses were grouped together, leading to a disorganized presentation. Inconsistent subpage designs and mixed calls to action resulted in a cluttered and unclear interface. Additionally, the site was not optimized for mobile devices and featured varying art direction across pages, contributing to a fragmented overall appearance.

Solution

To address these challenges, we implemented a comprehensive redesign focused on enhancing usability and functionality while honoring Suhrkamp’s legacy. The new design prioritizes mobile optimization with a flexible, responsive layout and features a structured content hierarchy that clearly organizes books by publishing house. Dedicated author pages now provide centralized information such as bibliographies, biographies, and event calendars. We streamlined the purchase process by incorporating clear product pricing and prominent "buy" buttons. The visual direction is modern and clean, yet it thoughtfully nods to Suhrkamp’s rich print heritage—blending tradition with contemporary usability for a cohesive, user-centered shopping experience.

‍Understanding user problems

The Suhrkamp webshop is outdated and fails to meet the standards of modern e-commerce. It lacks mobile optimization, with a rigid layout, and presents a disjointed user experience. Key elements like product pricing and calls to action, such as "buy" buttons, are missing, making it difficult for users to engage with and purchase books. The site’s content structure is cluttered, resembling a collage of ideas rather than a cohesive online bookstore, which leads to confusion and poor user engagement. A redesign is needed to provide a seamless, user-centered experience that meets current e-commerce expectations.

Subscription teaser & footer design

As an exclusive addition, we proposed a Suhrkamp Premium feature that offers users early access to events, lectures, books, and special publications. Additionally, the website’s footer has a retro touch, inspired by the publishing house's typographic standards from the 1960s and 1970s.
