Project dashboard of the planning platform with a site map, camera coverage and a capacity traffic light

Security planning platform

Planning a surveillance system without leaving the office

An in-house platform to plan surveillance installations end to end, taken from research to developer handover in five months.

Client
Bosch Security & Surveillance
Role
Senior Product Designer
Team
Vertical manager, product manager, 3 developers
Year
2025
Duration
5 months, then follow-up through development
Platform
Web application on Bosch servers

Overview

Situation
Bosch installations were planned with a third-party tool, Bosch hardware and a separate licensing portal. After the geopolitical shift, sensitive infrastructure could no longer be planned on foreign software.
Task
As the only designer, take an in-house planning platform from research to developer handover in five months, for installers, sales and the buyer approving the spend.
Action
11 methods from stakeholder mapping to five-day test cycles. The key finding was that the real constraint was capacity, not placement, which became a live traffic light.
Result
The design won the development agency, every feature shipped and the platform is now sold as white label, inside Bosch and to other companies.
  • 5 months

Situation

Bosch hardware was planned with foreign software

Bosch cameras secure airports, stations, factories and buildings. Planning an installation meant stitching together a third-party planning tool, Bosch hardware and a separate Bosch licensing portal.

After the geopolitical shift, that stopped being acceptable. Sensitive infrastructure could no longer be planned and recorded through foreign software, and the whole chain had to move onto Bosch servers.

Four groups depended on it: field technicians, sales, stakeholders and the buyer approving the spend.

The installation process it had to support

  1. Design the project

  2. Proposal submitted

  3. Proposal accepted

  4. Installed

  5. Completed

Five states, four handovers. Every problem I found later sat on one of them.

Task

Research to handover in five months, as the only designer

Role
Senior Product Designer
Duration
5 months, then follow-up through development
Scope
Research, UX, UI, prototyping, handover
Team
Vertical manager, product manager, 3 developers
Platform
Web application on Bosch servers

Goals

  • One planning chain: replace three tools with one in-house platform.
  • Trust the plan: installers can rely on it before they drive out.
  • Sell beyond Bosch: hardware providers must be swappable for white-label licensing.

Constraints

  • Time: five months, no research team, development starting soon after.
  • Compliance: NDAA and recording on Bosch servers were non-negotiable.
  • Four vocabularies: technicians, sales, stakeholders and buyers in one product.
